Seemingly endless fields, scorching hot deserts, huge darinig mountains, deep canyons sandy coasts and vast wilderness. This is the United States of America. The country of extremes. The world’s third largest country by area and nearly the third by population with the world’s number one economy. There are huge cities with inhabitants equal to a smaller country and remote places where you can wander for days before encountering another fellow human.
If you have the time and money, you can drive across the USA from, say, San Diego to Portland in the northeastern state of Maine: that 5100 kms can be arranged with a 50 hour’s drive.
The biggest of them is New York City on the East coast with its 10 million residents. Despite its magnitude it is not the nation’s capital. The capital, named after the frist president, George Washington, is Washington DC with less then a million calling it their home. Regardless of its smaller size it has a huge historic heritage. The White House, the home of the president, the domed Capitol Building, the National Air and Space Museum are just a few of the national icons found in the city.
It is hopeless to attempt to generalize about the distinctive characteristics of the American people. Even in the character of WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) Americans, there is a significant difference depending on which part of the country they live in or where they are from. There is the concept of the “melting pot”, with its amazing diversity of skin color, origin, religion, language, and lifestyle.
In America, people smile much more often than in Europe. For them, a smile is by no means necessarily a sign of joie de vivre or sympathy, but simply a polite gesture.
