Croatia is a South-east European country at the Balkan Peninsula. Zagreb, the country’s capital has rich history deriving from the Roman times. Zagreb is definitely made for strolling. If you decide visiting Croatia, especially the Adriatic sea, you will get an unforgettable experience about the Mediterranean. The most remarkable things, that strike you first, are the amazing clarity of the water. Don’t miss visiting the dazzling white pebbly beaches and long sandy coasts to relax your mind and body. But, if you intend to do more energetic activities, you can go snorkeling, diving, kayaking and windsurfing as well. It is not only the closeness of Adriatic sea that makes Croatia extraordinary, but its unrivaled cuisine as well. Did you know that Croatian kitchen is known as the “cuisine of regions”?

Croatian doughnuts: “Fritule” is quite a popular sweet treat not only in Christmas time but also in Carneval season or before Easter holiday. Furthermore, every region in Croatia has it’s own recipe. Knowing these facts, before doing anything, please be aware that Fritule causes addiction, due to it’s crunchy outside and soft and fluffy inside, not to mention that it can be made within 30 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 400 grams (3 1/4 cup; 14.1 oz) all-purpose flour
  • 12 grams (2 1/2 teaspoons) baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 heaping tablespoons powdered sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 360 grams (1 1/2 cup; 12.7 oz) plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon rum or brandy (optional)
  • appr. 750ml – 1l oil for frying
  • powdered sugar for sorinkling

Instructions (steps of cooking):

1st step
Mix flour with baking powder.

2nd step
Combine eggs, sugar, salt, yogurt, vanilla and rum in another bowl

3rd step
Mix the dry and wet mixture and whisk them until the dough turns smooth and there are no lumps.

4th step
Pour oil into a pan and wait until it gets hot. When you consider the oil is warm enough, turn the heat to medium heat. Carefully drop few pieces of ball-shaped pastry into the oil. Pay attention not to drop too many pieces. Fry the balls until they turn golden-brown. Place a paper towel into the dish before serving in order to drain the oil. Roll the balls with sugar and sprinkle them with chocolate sauce to taste.
